The Resort at Glade Springs
A Golf Travelers Notebook
By Brian Weis
Located in the New River-Greenbrier Valley Region, the resort at Glade Springs boasts three championship courses. Located 75 Miles from the Charleston airport, the drive will provide ample spots to view the Appalachian Mountains.
In 1960, the resort opened featuring 200 guest rooms, and 13,000 square feet of conference space. The property also encompasses a gated community sprawled over 1400 acres. Today the development comprises of 450 homes.
The Cobb Course
When Mike James, Director of Golf, first set foot on property he thought the place was special.
"While the two new courses steal all the accolades the classic course has stood the test of time. I love the new courses but I always seem to gravitate back to this course," Mike said.
Designed by noted architect George Cobb. The course features rolling fairways, mature hardwoods and sand bunkers as big as the state of West Virginia. Many of the greens are three club differentials. Locals will tell you that it is better to error on the side shorter. Longer on these greens will give you headaches.
Notable Holes
#5 - A sweeping dog leg right par-5 that is reachable in two. A large pond hides after the bend that should not come into play. The elevates green is protected with the large signature sand bunkers.
#10 - Mike James gushed about his favorite hole, "Number 10, reminds me of Augusta. A long par-4 dog leg left. Your second shot is demanding with huge traps in the front and left.
While I have never set foot on the hallowed ground, I took his word for it. The hole is stunning from tee to green. Your second shot needs to stick the green or you will be in the beach.
#16 - The signature hole requires carrying a ball over three water features. On the tee a well struck drive is needed to fly a fairway hugging pond twice. Before you swing out of your shoes, any ball over the hill will flirt with a another pond. James chuckled, "I have not played too many par 4's that require carrying 3 water features."
If you have aqua phobia the hole is no laughing matter.
Dining Options
Bunkers Sports Bar is casual dining and features traditional clubhouse fare from burgers to pizza. For more upscale dining Glades Grill serves American Cuisine in a resort casual atmosphere.
Stonehaven Course
Consisting of 7,203 yards from the black tees, the Stonehaven Course has an amazing topography featuring a meandering path looping around both sides of the 69-acre Chatham Lake and through a forest of maple, beech, hickory, and breathtaking oak trees. There are striking rocks outcropping along the way, and extraordinarily dramatic elevation changes of up to 80 feet per hole. This West Virginia golf course also offers the greatest variety of par 3's and par 5's anywhere on the east coast.
Woodhaven Course
Designed by the acclaimed golf course architect Tom Clark, the Woodhaven Course opened in 2010.
This course prides itself on offering a majestic view of the gorge, in addition to spectacular mountainous terrain scenery. Created for the specific purpose of complementing Glade Springs' signature golf courses - the Cobb and the Stonehaven - the Woodhaven Course is designed with returning nines with shelters at the farthest extremes of the routing. The course follows a path through stunning rock outcroppings, and a breathtakingly beautiful forest of maple, beech, oak, hickory, and huge rhododendrons

About: Brian Weis
Brian Weis is the mastermind behind GolfTrips.com, a vast network of golf travel and directory sites covering everything from the rolling fairways of Wisconsin to the sunbaked desert layouts of Arizona. If there’s a golf destination worth visiting, chances are, Brian has written about it, played it, or at the very least, found a way to justify a "business trip" there.
As a card-carrying member of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), International Network of Golf (ING), Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA), International Golf Travel Writers Association (IGTWA), and The Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG), Brian has the credentials to prove that talking about golf is his full-time job. In 2016, his peers even handed him The Shaheen Cup, a prestigious award in golf travel writing—essentially the Masters green jacket for guys who don’t hit the range but still know where the best 19th holes are.
Brian’s love for golf goes way back. As a kid, he competed in junior and high school golf, only to realize that his dreams of a college golf scholarship had about the same odds as a 30-handicap making a hole-in-one. Instead, he took the more practical route—working on the West Bend Country Club grounds crew to fund his University of Wisconsin education. Little did he know that mowing greens and fixing divots would one day lead to a career writing about the best courses on the planet.
In 2004, Brian turned his golf passion into a business, launching GolfWisconsin.com. Three years later, he expanded his vision, and GolfTrips.com was born—a one-stop shop for golf travel junkies looking for their next tee time. Today, his empire spans all 50 states, and 20+ international destinations.
On the course, Brian is a weekend warrior who oscillates between a 5 and 9 handicap, depending on how much he's been traveling (or how generous he’s feeling with his scorecard). His signature move" A high, soft fade that his playing partners affectionately (or not-so-affectionately) call "The Weis Slice." But when he catches one clean, his 300+ yard drives remind everyone that while he may write about golf for a living, he can still send a ball into the next zip code with the best of them.
Whether he’s hunting down the best public courses, digging up hidden gems, or simply outdriving his buddies, Brian Weis is living proof that golf is more than a game—it’s a way of life.
